Camels have been used by nomads, trade caravans and travelers of the Sahara for centuries, mostly as porting companions. For nomads trekking long distances, camels store water in their humps and the females produce milk. Nomads can drink the milk for hydration and nutrition, while the camel can continue to subsist off its stored water.
In Mauritania, camels make crossing the Sahara desert even possible. Without them, nomads would not be able to move long distances.
Many attractions in Mauritania are hard to reach by motor vehicle, so we will take camels with us to carry our things and keep the weight off our bodies to avoid exhaustion. It can be difficult to walk in the desert sand for long periods, so you may want to ride one from time to time to get your energy back. Camels are companions of the desert and are highly respected and appreciated on our journeys.
